Diving the Oregon Coast
Grocery Diving
The coastal range provides a wide variety of diving possibilities. Here in Florence you'll find what we call "grocery diving." This means we have a great variety of underwater delicacies. You'll find dungeness crab, cockles (clam), lingcod, sea bass, perch and many more.
You'll need a fishing and/or crabbing license, which can be purchased locally at the Sportsman, south of our shop on Hwy. 101, (541-997-3336 for more information).
Other items that are necessary:
- goodie bag
- crab measurer
- spear gun (if you're fishing)
and we carry all these items and more in our store year 'round.
North of Florence
North of Florence, you will find Newport. The dive sites here are:
- Jetty fingers, which are rock structures that extend out into the mouth of the river. This area is more protected and you will be able to see a greater variety of sea life. You can gather crab & clams here and spear fish too.
- Proposed Dive Park - click here for more...
South of Florence
South of Florence you can dive in
- Winchester Bay, which is similar to Florence's dive conditions. You can drive right out to the Coast Guard Tower to reach the dive location. Once there you have two options for a dive site. You can either go into the river over the jetty rocks, this is more of an advanced dive only because the river conditions can change drastically from the time you begin your dive to the time you are ready to exit.
- The "Triangle" is in the same area, but is protected from extreme changes in the river and you are still able to 'grocery' dive.
